“The design of the “Cloud” pavilion is inspired by the Polish and Japanese tradition of wooden architecture. The pavilion is designed on the basis of an individual interpretation of traditional carpentry connections. The project is inspired by analysis of slanted locks and dovetail joints connections. The pavilion’s composition is based on two groups of identical timber elements (long and short) connected with diagonal locks with an angle of 45 degrees for all connections.”

1.1 Two Unique Timber Elements
The composition is based only on two unique timber elements with custom designed locking system featuring diagonal cuts that allow for 8 different connection possibilities between every two consecutive elements.
1.2 Aggregation Logic
The clouds grow in an iterative process where every iteration has 8 possibilities for placing the next element, and as it grows in a stochastic aggregation process, the path is evaluated and optimized for spatial and structural efficiency.
1.3 Optioneering
With 8 possibilities for each iteration and a total number of the elements 120 for each cloud, the design space has 3*(8^360) possible design options.
A design of 3 clouds (continuous aggregations) was selected that achieve spatial efficiency and structural stability.
1.4 Assembly Process
“The installation “The Cloud” is the result of the Polish-Japanese research and workshop program carried out in the years 2020-21. by the Kengo Kuma and Associates and the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts of the Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University.”
2. Wooden Haze /
“N*THING IS POSSIBLE Exhibition at the National Design Centre of Singapore, curated by POTATO HEAD, OMA & FRIENDS, features the future of sustainable living.
By processing waste wood into a cylindrical shape, three basic components were designed (length 1000mm, 600mm, 360mm).
By combining them, an endless, ever-growing wooden structure was created, reminiscent of a molecular formula. The result is a wooden structure that grows endlessly and eternally.
POTATO HEAD was the partner responsible for waste material utilization project in Bali.”
Wooden Haze was the second application for the Wooden Clouds computational design system.
